About business fleet insurance

  • The importance of insuring your fleet

Fleets of vans are integral to certain businesses, as they facilitate in transporting vast amounts of cargo to different destinations. In order to meet your legal obligations, however, each one needs to have appropriate insurance in place. This can be a bit of a headache for you to keep track off, especially the larger the fleet and the more vehicles you have.

Juggling different policies with potentially different levels of cover and even different renewal dates isn’t really a task that anybody wants to be dealing with. Insuring your entire fleet under a single policy offers a much easier alternative and can save you time, money and effort in the long run.

Whether you decide to register all of your vans in the name of the business or a named individual like a director or partner, managing every vehicle under one van fleet insurance policy can give you peace of mind and allow you to get on with the important job of running your day-to-day business.

  • What is covered by van fleet insurance?

Every insurance provider is different and will have their own specific criteria for what can count as part of a fleet and what won’t. Minimum and maximum sizes can vary, but will generally start from two or three vehicles. In some cases, the number of vans in your fleet companies will provide cover for can go into the hundreds or even the thousands.

The types of van you own can also be taken into account, as some models may not necessarily qualify for van insurance. For the most part, any type of van or light goods vehicle will generally be accepted as part of a van fleet, but it’s always worth checking with individual providers if you have a mix of different vehicles.

Businesses uses like haulage and goods in transit will often be covered, as long as you can specify which of these functions will be carried out by particular vans. Transporting cargo to a single delivery point or making multiple drop-offs are standard types of business insurance cover that you can apply to multiple vans in your fleet.

  • Choosing the right level of cover

Each van in your fleet can have a different level of cover attached to it, or they can be the same across the board. The three types available to any vehicle provide cover for a range of damages caused to third parties or to your own vehicle.

At the absolute minimum, each van in your fleet needs to have third party only (TPO) insurance. This means that if you or one of your fleet drivers is involved in an accident with another motorist, your insurer will be able to pay out for claims made by the third party. To add a little extra benefit to yourself, third party, fire and theft (TPFT) cover will also mean that you can claim off your own insurance if your van is damaged by fire or stolen, as well as being protected against third party damage claims.

These cover types won’t allow you to make a claim for any accidental damages to your own van, though, meaning you would need to deal with the necessary repair costs yourself. If you wish to rely on additional cover that can help you by paying out for accidental damage to your vehicle, your windows and windscreen, and your personal effects inside the van, comprehensive cover is the highest level of insurance you can choose.

Comprehensive cover may not cost that much more than TPO and, in some cases, it can even be cheaper, especially as you insure more vehicles in your fleet. It’s always wise to get an idea of how much you could save with certain insurance types when adding new vans to your fleet insurance policy.
